What's the volume of a sphere? It fits, with space to spare, inside a cube with side length 2 x radius_sphere; the volume of the cube is length x width x height = (2 x radius_sphere)3, so what's the volume of the sphere which is less than this?

Clearly width x height x length does not always work as it depends upon the shape; volume = width x length x height is only true for a cuboid, other shapes use different formulae for volumes.

So what is volume?

Volume is the amount of space an object occupies.

Formula for various objects:

  • cuboid: volume = length x width x height
  • pyramid: volume = 1/3 x area_of_base x height
  • cone: volume = 1/3 x π x radius_of_base2 x height
  • sphere: volume = 4/3 x π x radius_of_sphere3.
