Nicolaus Copernicus is important because he found out that the Earth revolves around the Sun. Not the Sun and other planets revolving around Earth.

Copernicus was important because he was the first one to come up with a theory of the planets that had the Sun at the centre. It was not really a discovery, more an alternative way of explaining what was already known about the planets.

The discovery had to wait until Kepler and Newton came up with better theories that explained exactly how the planets moved, in detail.
