A cell is defined as a unit of life that takes in food/other necessities, gives away waste, reproduces, can heal itself, etc.... A plant is composed of cells, because it grows. A rock, however, is not, because it doesn't grow or repair itself, or take in food, water, or oxygen, etc. A wooden table would be composed of dead cells, because living trees can do all the things mentioned above, but when it's cut down, the cells die and lose their ability to reproduce etc.
