Ann's 18.

We can check this answer easily. Right now, Mary is 24 and Ann is 18. That means that six years ago, Mary was 18 and Ann was 12. In other words, Mary is now twice as old (24) as Ann was (12) when Mary was as old as Ann is now (18).

On the other hand, this is a classic brainteaser from the 1903 New York Times -- so perhaps by now, Ann is actually well over a century old!

---

Note that for any given age Mary = M, Ann will be 3/4 as old (3/4 M).

This is the result of the difference being 1/2 of 1/2 of Mary's age.

e.g. if Mary is 60, Ann is 45

So 15 years ago, Mary was 45 and Ann was 30, and Mary at 60 is twice as old as that.

If in two years you will be twice as old as you were five years ago how old you are now?

12 because 12 + 2 = 14. 12 - 5 = 7, which is half of 14. So in two years you will be twice as old as you are now.

Mary is twice as old as her brother and half as old as her father In 22 years her brother will be half as old as his father How old is Mary now?

Mary is now 22 yrs old, her brother is 11, and her father is 44 yrs old. In 22 years, her brother will be 33 and her father will be 66, while Mary will be 44 yrs old. To figure it out we need to set up algebraic equations relating everyone's current age: M (mary's age now) = 2*B (brother's age now) M = 1/2*F(father's age now) In 22 years from now, her brothers age will be half her father's age. So, B+22 = 1/2(F+22) We can use these equations to solve for everyone's age now. (1) Since Mary's age now is twice her brothers and half of her fathers we combine the first two equations to get: 2B = 1/2F or F=4B, so her father's age now is 4 times her brother's age now. (2) Using this equation and substitute the value for F in the equation which relates her brother's and father's ages 22 years from now and solve for her brother's age now. B + 22 = 1/2 (4B + 22) B + 22 = 2B + 11 B = 11, and F = 4*(11) = 44, and M=2*11=22
