I think the early Marxists shared the Romantic view of pre-industrial times as some kind of golden age. Engels' views on this were sharply criticized in 1844 by Bruno Hildebrandt, who at the time was Professor of Political Science at Marburg. He pointed out that the conditions described by Engels in The Condition of the Working Class in England ... not at all bad by comparison with conditions in much of Germany, especially among the rural and small-town poor. Bruno Hildebrand conceded that some employers were very harsh but raised the possibilty that the recently enacted Factory Acts might lead to some improvements. Engels never replied.

Engels focused on the negative results of industrialization because he was interested in exposing the harsh working and living conditions of the working class during the Industrial Revolution. He believed that these negative consequences, such as poor wages, long hours, and dangerous working conditions, highlighted the exploitation and inequality that existed in capitalist societies. By highlighting these issues, Engels aimed to promote social change and advocate for the rights of the working class.
