Only divide Chinese peony if it really needs it, and the Tree peony not at all.

This is usually done if needed every three years from late autumn to spring before growth begins again. In a frost-prone area, wait until frosts are finished in spring.

Lift the plants using a garden fork from all sides of the plant and pull or cut apart, ensuring there are 3-5 eyes and some roots on each section. Replant into prepared holes with the eyes between 1-2 inches below the soil surface.
