In the current 112th Congress of the United States of America, there are 242 Republicans in the House and 190 Democrats. There also 3 vacancies. It is fairly close to a 9:11 ratio (real number being 8.63). 55% of the House is Republicans, with just over 45% being Democrats.

Good Question. And a tough one to answer. The only place where Democrats and Republicans vote nationwide for the same offices is the election every four years for President and Vice President. And the numbers produced in those elections do not lend themselves to a party to party ratio suggested by your question because more than a third of people voting in that election are not party affiliated and even more are not specifically registered party members.

Nationally, the number of Democrats to Republicans to Independents hovers around a 1:1:1 ratio. Roughly the same number of Democrats, Republicans and Independents.

But these number swing wildly in individual elections, especially in local elections where the geography is smaller.
