An individual difference is any difference in the way in which people behave or think. For example, IQ and memory capabilities would be individual differences as these values vary between people. These must be controlled in psychological experiments to gain valid results, particularly when an independent measures design is used (different participants take part in each experimental group). If, for example, we were to do a study investigating the effects of alcohol on memory, and we gave one group of participants alcohol and kept the other one sober, and then asked both to recall a list of words, we could not easily tell whether any differences in recall scores were due to intoxication or individual differences. It may just be that, by chance, those in the sober group had naturally better memory abilities than those in the alcoholic group. This might be overcome to an extent by randomisation, where participants are selected randomly into experimental groups, but still remains a problem as still, by pure chance, one group could be naturally better at memorising than the other. Perhaps the best way to minimise the chance of individual differences compromising validity is to use a repeated measures design. In this way, participants take part in both experimental groups, and so act as their own control. However, in many instances, this would be difficult (in our example study above we would have to ask participants to recall a list of words sober, and then do the same drunk. However, this would be difficult, as if the same list of words was used then they may remember words from the sober condition when in the drunk condition, and if a different list was used then they may be naturally less able to remember these words than the other words). In this way, individual differences can be problematic in psychological research. We cannot assume that everyone acts and thinks in the same way, and our ability to generalise research is compromised because of this.
