In order to subtract one fraction from another one, both of them need to have

the same denominator. So one of these has to change.

Change "1 half" to "4 eighths". When you do that, you don't actually 'change'

anything. "4 eighths" is exactly the same amount as "1 half". You're just writing

it in a different way.

Now that your fractions both have the same denominator, the problem is

"4 of something" minus "1 of the same thing". Surely you can do the rest.
