There is no simple way which can be easily applied to all forms of equations. If the variable(s) can be eliminated from the equation then, if what is left is

  • false, then the equation has no solution.
  • true, then the equation is an identity.

The problem is complicated by the domains under consideration. The following are some examples of equations which have no solutions in one domain but do in another [larger] domain:

  • x + 2 = 0 has no solution in N (natural numbers) but does in Z (integers)
  • x*2 = 1 has no solution in Z but does in Q (rational numbers)
  • X^2 = 2 has no solution in Q but does in R (real numbers)
  • x^2 = - 2 has no solution in R but does in C (complex numbers).

Is 16 equals 16 no solution?

16 = 16 is an identity, not an equation. An identity does not have solutions.

How do you know when an equation has an infinite amount of solutions?

If the equation is an identity.

How do you know if a value a is a solution to an equation?

If this value a satisfy the equation, then a is a solution for that equation. ( or we can say that for the value a the equation is true)

How do you know if an equation is equivalent?

An equation is equivalent to another equation, if they have the same solution.

If an equation is an identity what is true about the solution?

It is true for all permissible values of any variables in the equation. More simply put, it is always true.

What is an infinite solution?

The equation or a system of equations having infinite solutions is called identity/identities. (a+b)^2=a^2+2ab+b^2 is an identity. It has infinite solutions. The equation is true for all values of a and b.

If an equation is an identity how many solutions does it have?

An identity equation has infinite solutions.

What is the solution to an equation?

a solution to an equation is the answer

Why do we represent the solution to an inequality with a graph on a number line but we don't do the same for the solution to an equation?

An equation has an equal sign, which means that we know what the variable is equal to :)

What is the difference between a situation and a solution equation?

A situation equation follows the order of the story problem. For instance:Johnny has 8 apples, he eats some, and has 3 left. The situation equation would be: 8 - a = 3A solution equation is the equation that would help you find the solution. Your brain doesn't automatically know what "a" is, it has to rearrange the order of the equation and then solve. The solution equation would be: 8 - 3 = a, then you would solve it.

What is the difference in solution and equation?

A solution is the answer to an equation.

What is an equation that has no solution called?
