Suppose you have an improper fraction of the form p/q where p>q>0.Divide p by q: suppose the integer part of p/q (the integer quotient) is r, leaving a remainder of s. Then p/q = r s/q.

If that alphabet soup has left you confused, try this:

Suppose you have the improper fraction 17/5

Divide 17 by 5 to give a quotient of of 3 and a remainder of 2. Therefore 17/5 = 3 2/5.

To convert an improper fraction to a mixed number, divide the denominator into the numerator. The answer is the whole number. Put any remainder over the original denominator to create the fraction part.

You have to divide the top and the bottom numbers in the fraction ( numerator, denominator ), and you will always get a mixed number, or a mixed number in lowest terms.
