If you accept, as some do, that about 5% of people are gay or lesbian, then, as there are more than 7 billion (7,000,000,000) people in the world, there must be more than 350 million (350,000,000) gay or lesbian people in the world(2014).

The US census does not collect data on sexuality; however, according to a recent study by the Williams Institute at the University of California, 11% of adults in the US have engaged in same-sex sexual behavior, but only 3.5% of the population identifies as being lesbian, gay, or bi-sexual. This lack of self-identification as being gay while actively engaging in homosexual behavior is most likely due to the fact that gays continue to be persecuted in U.S. culture. For this reason, it is likely that about 11% of people are homosexual.

Hate groups that persecute gays have taken these numbers that indicate how many people self-identify as being gay as the actual amount of people who are homosexual instead of looking at the much larger number of people who are attracted to the same-sex and/or have engaged in same-sex sexual behavior.

There is very little data outside the United States on the subject.

In the United States there are only about 1-5% of adults that openly identify themselves as homosexual. However, it is believed that between 10-25% of the population may have had some sort of homosexual relationship of some type in their lifetimes.

In addition, it is hard to define "homosexual" so that a majority of people agree on the definition.

The percentages are very controversial due to a number of factors of surveys:

1. Bias of the surveying company/researcher

2. Random sampling

3. Number of people surveyed

4. The stigma of admitting to be homosexual (Admitting homosexual practices can cause negative social impacts in some cultures.)

5. The stigma of not being tolerant of homosexual behavior (There is now a reverse discrimination regarding homosexual behavior - especially in California after proposition 8.)
Taking the world population at 7 billion, there would theoretically be 700,000,000 homosexual people. That is 700 million people because 10% of the world population is homosexual in accordance with Dr Alfred Kinsey's reports.

Other researchers including Billy et al have contradicted Dr Alfred Kinsey's report and has proposed the theory that perhaps only 2-3% of the world population is gay. Using the 2% figure of Billy et al, the number of gay people in the world would be 140,000,000 (140 million people).
