1000 milliseconds. the SI prefix milli means 1 thousandth, therefore if a millisecond is a thousandth of a second, then 1000 milliseconds have to combine to make a second. The prefix is familiar, and is commonly used as millilitre, milligram and millimetre, each meaning the same, 1/1000

It is 1000 because milli stands for 1/1000 (one-thousandth).
so therefore:
1 second = 1000 milliseconds.
