One more than the number of vertices of the bottom.

examples:

  • Triangular based pyramid:
4 vertices on a pyramid: three one the bottom, one on the top
  • Square base pyramid:
5 vertices on a pyramid. Four on the bottom, one on the top.
  • Hendecagonal based pyramid
12 vertices on a pyramid. Eleven on the bottom, one on the top

Hope this helps!

A pyramid is a generic term used to describe a polyhedron with a polygonal base and a number of triangles rising from that base to meet at an apex. A pyramid whose base is a polygon with n-sides (or vertices) has n+1 faces, n+1 vertices and 2n edges, where n ≥ 3.
