The answer would be 40 yards. His 15-yard line is 35 yards from the 50-yard line. The other team's 45-yard line is 5 yards from the 50 yard line. Add 35 + 5 to get a 40-yard run.

Another way to figure it is add 15 and 45 to get the non-run length of field which would be 60 yards. Subtract the 60 yards from 100 (total length of football field) to get the distance of the run, which was 40 yards.
