Method

0.5/1.0

Cancel down the decimal point

05/10

Drop the prefix zero

5/10

Cancel down by '5'

1/2

Similarly

0.35 becomes

0.35/1.00

035/100 = 35/100

= 7/20

However recurring decimals such as 0.3333... require a different method

We say let P = 0.333333....

Then multiply by 10

Then 10P = 3.333333....

Then sdubtract the two number

10P - p = 3.3333.... - 0..3333....

9P = 3.0

P

= 3/9

Cancel down by '3'

P = 1/3

Irrational Decimals such as 'pi' = 3.141592654.... or sqrt(2) + 1.414213562.... do NOT convert to an exact fraction.

pi = 3.14 ~ 22/7 are only approximations.
