During Desert Storm, I was deployed with a fuels NCO that claimed he knew Chief Pfingston from earlier in his career. He told me that the Chief was related to Conrad, either a brother or stepbrother (I don't remember now, but I believe it was stepbrother - same dad, different mom). Though these fuel guys had no problems pulling the leg of a young 2Lt, I couldn't see any reason why he would make this up since it just came up as a trivial point in general conversation, but ya never know.
I had the pleasure of meeting Chief Pfingston a couple of years later when he was visiting my base, however, he was meeting with a group of enlisted folks, and I was running off to a meeting so it was just more of a grip and grin moment. I had planned on seeing him later at a less formal function, and I was determined to ask him then since I am a big fan of Robert Conrad. Unfortunately, time didn't allow me to make it to that function. I've been kicking myself ever since for not asking him at that first meeting.
I have searched off and on over the years, but I can find no proof of any relation between the two men on Al Gore's internet. Their names aren't even close. However, the resemblance between the two is pretty strong, so I have to leave it as a definite maybe. Wish I had a better answer for you.
God bless you Chief Pfingston, and thank you for your long dedication of service to our country and our airmen while you were here on Earth.
