How do you change oil in John Deere GX85 lawn mover?
On the lower portion of the left side of the engine you'll find
a long pipe with a threaded pipe plug cap on the end. That's the
oil drain pipe. Remove the plug cap with an adjustable wrench (use
a pair of channel locks on the pipe itself if it starts to
un-thread from the motor). Drain out the old oil and replace the
pipe plug. The oil filter is right next to it (looks kinda like a
an inverted pregnant orange juice can). The oil filter base has one
or two threaded plugs in it. Remove the lower one and let the oil
filter drain out then reinsert the plug. Unscrew the oil filter
using a strap wrench and replace it with a new one. Make certain
that the inner surface of the filter base is clean and that the
rubber seal from the old filter didn't stick to it (if it did, peel
it off and toss it out with the old filter). Lubricate the rubber
seal on the new filter with some fresh oil and screw it down in
place (typically tighten it 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn after the rubber
seal touches the housing. Fill with fresh oil at the dipstick tube
opening (usually 1.75 quarts with a filter change). Re-insert the
dipstick, check to confirm the oil level and you're done! 30
minutes including clean-up. No sweat!
