No. There are things mathematically called 'negative ' quantities.. If you talk about distances on a graph, we call movement to the right- positive , and movement to the left - negative . You needed to define what you mean when you are using the word distance. When Land Surveyors measure distances they frequently need to use the negative sign to indicate very clearly what is to be conveyed to the reader of their information, especially when they are doing surveying of levels and heights under bridges and in tunnels etc.
