In a division the:

* dividend is the number being divided into: it goes inside a "bus stop shelter" or to the left of the divide sign (÷ or /);

* divisor is the number being divided by: it goes outside a "bus stop shelter" or to the right of the divide sign (÷ or /);

* quotient is the result: it goes over a "bus stop shelter" or to the right of an equals sign (=).

So in 7 ÷ 76 (read as 7 divided by 76) the number 7 is the dividend and the number 76 is the divisor.

When a "bus stop shelter" is used, it can be read as "x divided into y" where x is the divisor outside the shelter and y is the dividend inside the shelter.

With the divide sign, it is read as "y divided by x"; with "y ÷ x", the dividend is the 'y' and the divisor is the 'x'.

The divisors of a whole number are those whole numbers which are less than or equal to it (and greater than 0) which divide into that number exactly. They are also called factors.

The divisors of 7 are: 1 and 7 only - 7 is a Prime number

The divisors of 76 are: 1, 2, 4, 19, 38 and 76

There is no common divisor other than 1, so 7/76 is as simple as the fraction can be written.

7 divided by 76 is a fraction that is between 0 and 1. The concept of divisors makes sense only for whole numbers: otherwise every non-zero number can divide every number.
