XIV is the number 14 in Roman numerals.

Roman Numerals are mathematical equations based on numeric placements.

I = 1

V = 5

X = 10

L = 50

C = 100

M = 1000

I = 1

II would be 1+1 = 2

III would be 1+1+1 = 3

Now when you move closer to the next factor you have the previous marker coming before or after the next numeric factor and thus end up with.

IV as the I comes before the V it means to subtract I from V:

IV: 5-1=4

V=5

VI as the I comes after the V it means to add I to V:

VI: 5+1=6

VII: 5+1+1=7

VIII: 5+1+1+1=8

IX as the I comes before the X it means to subtract I from X:

IX: 10-1=9

X=10

XI as the I comes after the X it means to add I from X:

XI: 10+1=11

XII: 10+1+1=12

XIII: 10+1+1+1=13

XIV As above XIV means 10 + 5 -1 the IV comes after X which means to add the sum of IV to X:

XIV: 10+(5-1)=14

and so on down the line.

Another example in Roman Numerals, the year 2009 would be MMIX meaning

(1000*2)+(10-1)=2009
