A mathematical formula is a statement which, given all but one of a set of variables, allows you to calculate the possible value(s) of the missing variable.

Many formulae will give single solutions but the quadratic formula, for example, usually has two solutions.

A formula is a functional relationship such that if you know the values of all but one of the variables, you should be able to calculate the value of the remaining variable.
