y=2x-4 is a linear equation (an equation to graph a line).

Heard of y=mx+b?

m is the slope, in this case 2. This shows how steep the line is slanted.

-4, or b, is the y-intercept which is, like the name implies, where the line intersects with the y-axis.

If you look at this on a graph (2-dimensional Cartesian coordinate system, the one with the y-axis and x-axis) for whatever number x is, y will be the same number you'd get if you solved that equation.
