Remember BIDMAS (UK) or PEMDAS (US) which sets out the order of operations. These stand for

  1. Brackets or Parentheses
  2. Index or Exponent
  3. Division and Multiplication
  4. Addition and Subtraction.

So 6(-3) + 12/(-2) + 4

= -18 + (-6) + 4 = -8 + 4 = -20.
