A prism, as defined in the website bi-optic.com is a transparent piece of glass with two or more planes through which light can be reflected or refracted. The shape of a prism may vary from wedge shaped to parallel sides with connecting verticals. The objective of a prism if to disperse light into a spectrum.

Prisms are thus named according to the shape of its base which are always parallelograms. ie a hexagonal prism is so named since its base is a hexagon.

The volume of a prism can be measured by using the equation:

Volume = base x height

As mentioned above prisms are most ofter used to disperse light and measure angles of refraction of light.

When passing a white light through a prism it will disperse into the entire spectrum of colours being: Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet (an easy way to remember the order of these colours is by using the name ROY G BIV)
