When comparing negative numbers the magnitude does not dictate whether a number is larger than another.

Imagine the number line and the numbers marked

.....-13, -12, -11, -10, -9, -8, -7, -6, -5. -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, +1, +2, +3,.... etc.

When comparing negative numbers, the one closer to zero on the number line is greater than the one farther away from zero.

Here -12 is farther away from -8, so -12 is smaller than -8 or

-8 is larger than -12
