There is an urban legend going around that the largest grizzly caught in Alaska weighed around 1600 lbs and stood around 12.5 feet tall. However, in reality, the giant bear was analyzed and found to have been 10\'6" tall and weighed only around 1000 to 1200 lbs.

If we include all brown bear subspecies under "grizzly bear", there is a confirmed record of a male taken by hunters that weighed 1556 pounds. However, if we only take the inland subspecies that was historically known as the grizzly bear, there are a few records of bears approaching 1000 pounds. One was killed in 1909 in California that weighed 1003 pounds, but this was a very fat bear that had been feeding on livestock.
