It is mainly the orientation of the object. If I have a fancy bedspread I would measure its width and length. But, if I chose to hang it on a wall, those same measures would be referred to as length and height!

For three-dimensional objects, height is usually the measurement from top to bottom, width is usually the measurement from side to side, and length is usually the measurement from front to back. It depends on your perspective and the position of the object (if the object is tipped onto its side, what was height becomes width or length).

If the object is a rectangular parallepiped, then the longest side is usually the length. If it rests on its longest side then its altitude is its height, the remaining side is the width
