A root is the solution of the equation when one side (usually the Right Hand Side) is set equal to 0.

To take very simple examples, x = 3 is

  • the solution of 2x = 6 or
  • the root of 2x - 6 = 0

An equation can have a solution; a function can't.A root of a function (for example, of a polynomial) is any value of the variable for which the function is zero.
