There are different formulae for various special cases, such as rectangular block, sphere, pyramid, etc.; but the most general calculation is called integration: you imagine cutting the figure up into thin parallel slices, and calculate the volume of each as area times thickness. Then you add everything up.If the slices are of an irregular shape, you need to cut them up once more, in a direction perpendicular to the first.

Instead of parallel slices, you can also slice it up in other ways - whatever makes the calculations easier.
