the least common multiple is the lowest number that 5 and 16 (or any other numbers) go into that equal. for example, the lowest common multiple (LCM) of 5, and 10, is 10. because that is the lowest number that 5 and 10 will go into. so the lowest common multiple of 5 and 16 = 80.

there are two ways to solve, one by counting by the number: for example

5: 5,10,15,20,25,30,35,40,45,50,55,60,65,70,75,80

16: 16,32,48,64,80

the lowest number that is the same in both of these is 80.

Second way to solve:

find the prime factors of both 5 and 16: For example

16

^

8 2

^

4 2

^

2 2

5:5

16:2x2x2x2

now count the most amount of prime numbers in both 5 and 16.

so there are 5's and 2's. So there is only one 5, and four 2's. now multiply 5 times four 2's.

so it would look like 5x2x2x2x2= (LCM)

5x2=10

10x2=20

20x2=40

40x2=80

See, there are four 2's and one 5.

Hope this helped!

Multiples of 6 = 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54...

Multiples of 16 = 16, 32, 48, 64...

Therefore least common multiple is 48.
