in order to answer this problem you have to first make the denominators (bottom number) match.

Do this by finding the smallest common multiple (the smallest number that both of the denominators divide into) of the denominators.

  1. 3/4 - 1/2
  2. 3/4 - (1/2) x 2 (4 is the smallest common multiple of 2 and 4. Multiply 1/2 by 2 so that the denominators match)
  3. 3/4 - 2/4 (now you just subtract the numerators (top number). leave the denominators as they are.)
  4. 3/4 - 2/4 = 1/4
