Although the question does not say so, it is assumed the answer is two numbers that meet the requirements.

So, if the numbers are a and b, then ab = 7 and a+b = -6

From the second, b = -a-6 so from the first, a*(-a-6) = 7

or -a2 - 6a = 7 or a2 + 6a + 7 = 0

This has the solutions -3 +/- sqrt(2) and these are the two number required.
