Prime numbers are integers (counting numbers) that cannot be divided evenly by any other integers other than 1 and themselves. Some numbers that are prime are: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, 31, 37, and 41. (The number 1 is not a prime number by definition.)

Composite numbers are integers that can be factored. Some examples are 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, 15, 16, 18, 20, 21, 22, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 30, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 38, 39, 40 and onward.

If we look at all the integers, all the counting numbers, we'll see that they are either prime or composite numbers. And the set of all prime numbers and the set of all composite numbers (and the number 1) will be all the (positive) integers. This refers to whole numbers. A prime number is a whole number, greater than 1, which has no smaller (whole) factors. The first prime numbers are 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, ...A composite number is one that can be split into smaller factors. For example, 4 = 2x2, 6 = 2x3, 77 = 7x11, etc.
