That would be one huge wire!. I've never seen a tankless water heater being powered by a single wire. They are usually 3 separate 40 or 50 amp circuits that use three separate 2 pole breakers. Check your wiring diagram that comes with the unit.

Wire feeders are based on the amperage of the load. To find the amperage, when wattage is stated, a voltage must be stated. For purposes of the equation, 240 volts will be used. The equation is, Amps = W/E. Amps = 17250/240 = 72 amps. A #4 copper conductor with an insulation factor of 90 degrees C is rated at 95 amps. The length is not relevant in this situation. The over current protection for this circuit is 80 amps, this can be in the form of a two pole breaker or two pole fuse disconnect.

Does a tankless water heater require a thermal expansion tank?

In America, local building codes will decide. For example, in Pinellas County, Florida, they are required with every tankless installation, but not required in some surrounding counties. Always use a certified plumber, and hold him/her accountable to meet local Codes via the Inspection process. Contact your local Building Inspection officials for info on equipment requirements and permitting. Expansion tanks are ALWAYS a good addition to a gas or electric tankless system. All of these systems have their own controls that adjust the amount of heat applied to the water in the coils. If these malfunction, overheating may cause a steam bubble to be created inside the tankless heating unit. An expansion tank allows for the extra pressure from this expanded water to be absorbed safely.
