Let the two numbers be represented by a and b.

Then, ab = 160 therefore b = 160/a.

As, a + b = 24 we can now write, a + 160/a = 24, and after multiplying throughout by a :-

a2 + 160 = 24a, re-arranging this becomes :- a2 - 24a + 160 = 0

Solving this using the quadratic formula gives the solutions, a = 12 ± 4i

Therefore the two numbers are 12 + 4i and 12 - 4i.
