This is only true if you use complex numbers.

Given:

a + b = -4

ab = 14

Then:

a(-4 - a) = 14

-a2 - 4a - 14 = 0

a2 + 4a + 14 = 0

a2 + 4a + 4 = -10

(a + 2)2 = -10

a + 2 = ± i(10)1/2

a = -2 ± i(10)1/2

So the two numbers that meet those conditions would be -2 + i√10 and -2 - i√10
