x *y=-40 x+y=-20 Subtract y from both sides of the second equation and you get:

x=-20-y

replace x in the first equation with this value and you get:

(-20-y)*y=-40

or

-20y -y^2 = -40

0 = y^2 +20y -40

Now use the quadratic formula to solve for y.

(I won't do the rest of your homework.)
