There is a good reason why Spain divided the world in 2 with Portugal in the infamous 1494 treaty of tordesilhas. They both had the most powerful armadas at that time and Portugal came to be the first global empire in the World.

In the 1500s, Spain was considered one of the strongest countries in the world. Its vast empire, wealth from colonies in the Americas, and powerful military made it a dominant force in Europe and beyond during that time period.

There is a good reason why Spain divided the world in 2 with Portugal and not France, in the treaty of tordesilhas. Spain and Portugal had the most powerful armadas in the world at that time and Portugal was the first global empire in the world.

Ming China and the Ottoman Empire made great candidates for the strongest nation in the 1500s. Although Spain, France, HRE, and Poland were strong nations, the Ottomans were at their peak in the 1500s and 1600s and Ming China had an immense population. Another honourable mention could be the Mughal Empire which was a rising indian power in the mid 1500s to 1700s.
