There are two main situations.

  • when one (or more components) in a calculation is given in rounded form, it will limit the accuracy of the answer. For example, if you use pi = 3.1416 then the calculated area should not have more than 5 significant digits.
  • if the answer to an exact calculation is a long decimal string - particularly an irrational number.
