The exact size of the original 13 states was a bit uncertain, since much of the land had never been surveyed and accurately measured. Add to that the fact that the states did not cover their present boundaries. At the time the US was founded, Virginia may have been the largest state- since it included lands are far west as the Mississippi River, and as far north as the Great Lakes.
