Babbage invented a 'counting machine' called The Difference Engine. This thing was spectacular. In those days it took a lot of people to count thing...taxes, bankers, areas of finance and markets...all about counting large amounts. Charles Babbage created his Difference Engine and it actually worked. He could put a couple of number in it and it would do any of various mathematical equations and serve him up the answer. It was a mass of cogs and wheels. A London museum constructed an original, working model from Babbage's blueprints.

In 1822, Charles Babbage develops a working model of a mechanical computer called Difference Engine powered by steam. It can store the programs to perform calculations and print the result automatically. Later in the year 1837, he designs the first mechanical computer knows as Analytical Engine which could do the complicated calculation and store the result at each stage. This Analytical Engine laid the basis for the modern computer due to which Charles Babbage is also known as the Father of Computers.

Because he invented a mechanical computer called the Analytical Engine, which had it been built would have had the basic features required of any modern digital computer. The Analytical Engine had a Harvard architecture reading instructions from punched cards, used decimal arithmetic (not binary), separated the ALU from data storage, had full error checking mechanism that would halt the computer on error preventing the generation of incorrect results, and was powered by a steam engine. It would of course have taken several seconds per instruction, but still this would have been faster than most human computers.
