The Milwaukee brace, also known as a cervico-thoraco-lumbo-sacral orthosis or CTLSO, is a back brace used in the treatment of spinal curvatures (such as scoliosis or kyphosis) in children. It is a full-torso brace that extends from the pelvis to the base of the skull. This brace is normally used with growing adolescents to hold a 25° to 40° advancing curve. It is often prescribed to be worn 23 hours a day for several years, or in some cases, permanently to offset worsening of the spinal curve deformity.

If you are still growing, the curve can gradually progress (get worse). If you're no longer growing, it's much less likely that the curve will progress - but still possible. Doctors don't know why this happens, so your doctor should be scheduling regular check-ups to monitor your spine. If you're at 33 degrees and still growing, most doctors will recommend bracing. There are several different types of braces (Boston brace, Milwaukee brace, Providence brace), and most need to be worn ~23 hours per day. The Providence brace only needs to be worn overnight; ~12 hours per day. Bracing is supposed to either slow or stop the curve's progression, but it's not always entirely effective - again, doctors don't know why.
Most back braces are removable, they are to be worn for an advised number of hours each day. Your doctor will inform you of how many hours it must be worn each day, in some cases it will be during all awake hours except when bathing.
