That will depend on what property of the hairbrush you want to measure.

-- The length could best be measured with a ruler, and described

in units of centimeters.

-- The weight could best be measured with a scale, and described

in units of Newtons.

-- The mass could best be measured with the same scale, and with

the appropriate proportionality constant for the planet on which the

measurement is made, and described in units of grams.

I would use a scale to measure the weight of a hairbrush. Then, I would

describe its weight to others using units of ounces or newtons. Many folks

would stare blankly at these units, and I'd be forced to give them a number

in grams. This is an incorrect use of that unit, but it's difficult to hold back

the tide.
