The Khan AcademyKhan Academy is a not-for-profit organization available free of charge to anyone who wants to learn. Founded by a man named Sal Khan as a help for his nieces and nephews, the Academy has grown to a vast repository of knowledge. Each video is a piece of the puzzle and is accessible to anyone and everyone. The lessons are coupled with exercises to help the student put newly gained knowledge into practice until it is mastered. Subjects include art appreciation and literature, as well as branches of mathematics and science. There are thousands of video lessons, one of which is this math game.
The Angle GameThis video clip introduces the first of two parts of what Mr. Khan calls "The Angle Game." Mr. Khan draws a series of lines intersecting each other at various points. A few pieces of vital information are given as clues to help the person playing the game figure out the measurement of a determined angle. To determine the angle's measurement, one must employ one's mathematical knowledge -- the relationships between the angles within a triangle or those formed when a transversal intersects two parallel lines, for example. Doing this puzzle exercise helps the person put that knowledge to use in a practical way, all the while having fun and making discoveries about the patterns in mathematics.
Step by StepMr. Khan is very careful to go over each step along the way, explaining in detail how he arrives at each answer to solve the puzzle. In most cases, this involves reviewing principles with which the student should be familiar. Geometrical terms are also reviewed in the process. Using a modern "blackboard," he shows each part in a different color to highlight angles that are congruent or supplementary, for example. The students can rewind the video clip if they want to repeat a section of the lesson or explanation. This is one aspect of these types of lessons that people appreciate.
