If you think about this for a second I'm sure you can figure it out. Do you want to have a sharp knife on a slippery surface where it might slip and cut you? Or should you use a surface that is not likely to end up with you chopping your fingers off?

If you cut a rectangle in half you wouldn't get a solid figure at all, since a rectangle is a plane figure. If you made a straight line cut you would get either a triangle or a quadrilateral of some variety depending on exactly how the cut was made.
