Miles Coverdale (1488-1569) is best known as the producer of the first complete English Bible in 1535. Thomas Cromwell, a friend of Coverdale and also vice-regent to King Henry VIII of England convinced the King of a need for an official English Bible. Thus, under royal patronage, Coverdale was able to revise his first edition which resulted in the 'Great Bible' of 1539. This was his greatest achievement and had an important influence on the 1611 King James Bible.
