According to a 2002 report by the USDA, the following constitute approximate percentages of land use in the US as of whole (which includes Alaska, a state with a size that can change a lot of said numbers).

Growing crops: 15%

Idle cropland or pasture: 36%

National defense, urban, and transportation: 4.5%

Ungrazed forest land: 23%

Wildlife and recreation: 10.5%

Other: 10% (desert, tundra, swamp, bare rock)

NOTE: total is 99% due to rounding.

I would consider the last three designations as "natural habitat for wildlife," so about 43%.
