The English Language Amendment was passed promoting Standard English as the national language of California. However, throughout the generations foreign speaking children tend to forget their language as they grow older and are sometimes even ashamed of using their language in public. In the Philippines, for example, there are numerous tribes, 7,107 islands, and 171 languages - many of which have been long forgotten. Under the educators' instruction, Filipinos are required to learn English during their childhood and teenage years. Those who come to America will slowly improve their English language skills and will eventually discover acceptance in the community simply through the public use of the national language. Some may become careless and fail to recognize the importance of maintaining the language that their parents and grandparents have once taught them. Every seven years a language is lost, and it is unfortunate to see how fast dialects become extinct over time. If American-born people of various ethnic backgrounds were to neglect the use of their own cultural language by only using English, not only will they lose the backbones of their cultures, but they will also lose the souls of their identities. The constant use the Standard English system will only contribute to the thousands of wonderful languages that are gradually fading away.
