* There are no correct statistics and that's why it's called 'cheating' (no one knows in many cases who is cheating on who.) However, the guesstimate statistics are high and getting worse every year.
I can not give you a simple answer. It is very individual and subjective. I will assume that you are referring to probability theory. Statistics is based on an understanding of probability theory. Many professions require basic understanding of statistics. So, in these cases, it is important. Probability theory goes beyond mathematics. It involves logic and reasoning abilities. Marketing and politics have one thing in common, biased statistics. I believe since you are exposed to so many statistics, a basic understanding of this area allows more critical thinking. The book "How to lie with statistics" is a classic and still in print. So, while many people would probably say that probability theory has little importance in their lives, perhaps in some cases if they knew more, it would have more importance.
The two main branches of statistics is Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics.

If you are asking about "dismissed" cases, I do not believe that nationwide statistics are kept on this subject.
hi members, i have been faced with the same question. but this was my idea. to answer this question, we should ask ourselves the following quetions. * what are the subgroups of cases? * what can you learn from calculating summary statistics seperately for subgroups of cases? * how can you graph summary statistics for subgroups? with these questions answered then you have answered the whole question. The statistics methods are loosely categorised in two separate concepts. 1. descriptive Statistics 2. Inferencial Statistics Any treatment of data leading to collection presentation and summaries of numerical data is known as descriptive statistics. Making general statements from the study of particular cases, or nay treatment of data that leads to prediction or inference concerning a larger group of data, is known as inferential statistics.

Most criminal cases are heard in the state trial courts. By comparison, the federal courts hear relatively few criminal cases (only 78,428 in 2010), many related to illegal Immigration, whereas the state courts, combined, try more than a million criminal cases per year. A report published by the Bureau of Judicial Statistics estimated 1,132,290 criminal cases were filed in state courts in 2006 (the most recent year for which aggregate statistics are available).
